Poplar fluff, heat, allergies: how to understand that you are ill and save yourself?

Doctors say whether poplar fluff is as terrible as they say about it

We began to sneeze more often, buy pills for allergy symptoms, and set fire to the poplar fluff lining the sidewalks. Seasonal allergies came to the cities along with May.

We talked to two allergists to find out if allergists suffer from poplar fluff, how to recognize a reaction to pollen, and what to do if you live in a flourishing city. The questions of Karabas LIVE were answered by the President of the Association of Allergologists of Ukraine, Professor Boris Pukhlyk, and Candidate of Medical Sciences, Director of the Kyiv Medical Center ""Alergologi"" Marina Borisyuk.

Some people believe that all the poplars should be cut down in the cities. Is it true that fluff is the cause of spring allergies?

B.P.: In this case, we are talking about pollinosis. This is an allergy, i.e. hypersensitivity to plant pollen. Pollinosis is present in 40% of the world's population, in Ukraine it occurs in 10-15% of residents.

M.B.: Allergy to poplar down is only in 10% of allergy sufferers.

Seasonal allergy manifests itself depending on the time of year. In spring, it occurs due to the flowering of such trees as alder, walnut, maple and birch. There are also reactions to dandelion, nettle, plantain, pine and oak.

In July, weedy grasses bloom, the main of them are the common cat grass and timothy. Then cereals (rye, wheat) ripen, and ragweed blooms in August. Wormwood is the most dangerous in September.

What are the most common allergens in Kyiv?

B.P.: In our climate zone, it is pollen of ragweed, wormwood, and birch.

How do you know that I have an allergy?

MB: Allergy symptoms are sneezing, nasal congestion, without fever and other symptoms of a cold. Also itching in the eyes, abundant watery discharge from the nose and the first dry cough after walking.

How will allergy sufferers make life in cities easier?

M. B.: Leave during the blooming of the plant. You can also rinse your nose with saline solutions after walking, do not walk for a long time in dry, windy weather. You can put protective nets on the windows, wash yourself with thermal water and wash your head every day.

Can an allergy occur in a person who has never had it? What to do in this case?

BP: Allergic diseases can occur in two cases: with a hereditary predisposition - atopy, and also due to an excess of allergens in the environment. In such cases, you should consult an allergist. It is important to detect allergies as early as possible.

Is it possible to make a person never have allergies?

BP: No. If an allergy is detected in time, specific immunotherapy (SIT) can be used. It can cause remission of the disease for many years. Sometimes for life.

MB: This method prevents the appearance of symptoms and ""switches"" the mechanisms of the human immune system. To do this, the person is injected with microdoses of the allergen, and then its amount is increased. The body gets used to it and no longer reacts to the stimulus.

The course lasts approximately three years and is allowed for children from the age of 5. SIT therapy for pollen allergens is carried out after the end of flowering, for dust, mold, animal fur - around the clock. There is no therapy for food allergens.

Is it true that the number of people with allergies is increasing every year?

BP: The growth of pollinosis is caused by atmospheric pollution (emissions from industrial enterprises, vehicles, etc.) and the binding of chemical agents to plant pollen, as well as its modification.

MB: Allergy is the immune system's response to an allergen. Taking new antibiotics without a doctor's prescription affects this system. Its change leads to the fact that a person begins to react to new stimuli to which there was no similar reaction before.

Most often, a person is already born with an allergy to certain irritants, that is, the manifestations of allergies begin in the first months of life. Now there are many people 25-30 years old with primary allergies.

The same applies to ecology, the quality of water, meat, etc. Antibiotics are widely used in the meat industry, food stabilizers and other additives are added to products. All this affects our immune system.
